Murmuration of Starlings on Mynydd Llanllwni.

A murmuration of starlings
A murmuration of starlings
There are few sights in British wildlife that can better a murmuration of starlings in full action mode. Their dazzling display of synchronised aerobatics on a spring evening, before settling down to roost for the night, have entertained and enthralled all those who have seen it. However it would seem that they are no less enthusiastic during the day.

Coming down off Mynydd Llanllwni on a cold spring morning, we were able to watch as the sky darkened with the arrival of thousands of starlings. They flew in great swathes back and for across a piece of open common with the sole intention, it would seem, of having themselves a good time. This was  much to the annoyance of the poor pony who was just trying to get on with his daily routine. Perhaps the constant hum of those countless wing beats as they passed overhead was reason for a starling's collective noun.
